Echo Show Stuck on Setup Screen: Causes, Fixes, and When to Reset

If your Echo Show is stuck on the setup screen, the problem is usually tied to Wi-Fi, power, software, or a failed first-time registration.

The good news is that most cases can be resolved with a few targeted checks before you consider a full reset.

Why an Echo Show gets stuck during setup

An Amazon Echo Show needs to complete several steps before it becomes usable: booting the device, connecting to Wi-Fi, registering to your Amazon account, and downloading the latest firmware.

If any one of those steps fails, the display can appear frozen on the setup page, endlessly loading, or unable to move past language, Wi-Fi, or account screens.

This issue can happen on new devices, after a factory reset, or after a power outage, router change, or network password update.

In many cases, the Echo Show is working but cannot complete registration because of a connection or account mismatch.

Start with the simplest checks

Before changing settings, confirm the basic hardware conditions.

Small power or connection issues often look like software problems.

  • Use the original Amazon power adapter if possible.
  • Plug the Echo Show directly into a wall outlet, not a power strip.
  • Check that the cable is firmly seated at both ends.
  • Let the device stay powered for at least 5 to 10 minutes during first boot.

If the screen is dim, flickering, or repeatedly restarting, power delivery may be unstable.

A weak adapter or loose cable can interrupt setup before the device finishes initializing.

Check your Wi-Fi network before retrying setup

Wi-Fi is the most common reason an Echo Show gets stuck on setup.

Amazon Echo devices usually prefer a standard 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz home network with a simple password and a stable internet connection.

Verify these network basics

  • The router is online and other devices can browse the web.
  • You are using the correct Wi-Fi password.
  • The network name does not contain unusual characters if possible.
  • MAC address filtering, captive portals, or guest-network restrictions are not blocking the device.
  • The router is not limiting new device connections.

If your home has dual-band Wi-Fi, try the 2.4 GHz band first, especially during initial setup.

Some smart displays connect more reliably on 2.4 GHz because of the longer range and better wall penetration.

Restart the router and modem

A router reboot can clear temporary DHCP, DNS, or authentication issues that prevent registration.

Unplug your modem and router for about 30 seconds, plug the modem back in first, then the router, and wait for the internet light to stabilize before trying setup again.

Move the Echo Show closer to the router

Weak signal strength can stall the setup flow or cause the device to time out while it is trying to register.

Place the Echo Show within a few feet of the router for setup, especially if the device has not yet stored your network details.

If setup works near the router but fails in the intended room, the issue is likely signal-related rather than a device defect.

In that case, consider repositioning the router, using a mesh Wi-Fi system, or adding a range extender designed for smart home devices.

Make sure the device is signed into the correct Amazon account

Echo Show registration depends on Amazon account authentication.

If the device was previously owned, used as a return, or reset but not fully deregistered, setup may stall while trying to link it to an account.

Use the Alexa app or Amazon account associated with the device when possible.

If you are setting it up as a gift or after a previous owner, ensure the device has been removed from the old account in Amazon’s device settings.

Check device registration in the Alexa app

  • Open the Alexa app on your phone.
  • Go to Devices.
  • Look for the Echo Show under All Devices.
  • If it appears there unexpectedly, remove it and try setup again.

Account conflicts can also happen if you are signed into multiple Amazon profiles.

Use the primary account you want associated with the Echo Show.

Update the Alexa app and your phone

The Echo Show setup process often relies on your smartphone running the Alexa app.

If the app is outdated, has corrupted cache data, or lacks necessary permissions, setup may fail even when the speaker itself is fine.

Make sure the Alexa app is updated from the App Store or Google Play.

On Android, also confirm that location, Bluetooth, and nearby device permissions are enabled if the app requests them.

These permissions help with device discovery and local setup.

Force a restart if the screen appears frozen

If the Echo Show is visibly stuck and not progressing, a restart can clear a temporary boot issue.

For many models, unplugging the power for 30 seconds and reconnecting is enough to force a clean reboot.

After reconnecting power, wait patiently.

The device may spend several minutes showing the setup screen while it loads firmware, checks Amazon services, or recalibrates the display.

Try setup again after a full factory reset

If the device is still stuck on setup, a factory reset may be necessary.

This is especially useful for secondhand Echo Shows, units that were interrupted during an update, or devices that keep looping back to the same screen.

The reset process varies by model, but it typically involves holding specific buttons or using on-screen options from the settings menu if the device responds.

After the reset, the device should return to a clean setup state.

Use factory reset only after other steps fail

Factory reset removes saved Wi-Fi networks, personalization, smart home links, and local preferences.

Because of that, it should be a last-step fix after checking power, Wi-Fi, app, and account issues.

  • Reset if the device is looping or unresponsive.
  • Reset if it was previously owned by someone else.
  • Reset if setup fails after repeated network changes.

Watch for Amazon service outages

Sometimes the problem is not your hardware at all.

Amazon Alexa services can experience temporary outages that affect device registration and setup.

During an outage, the Echo Show may appear to freeze or fail to connect even though your home network is functioning normally.

Check whether other Amazon services, Alexa skills, or account features are also having problems.

If so, wait and try again later rather than repeatedly resetting the device.

When the Echo Show may be defective

If you have confirmed power, internet access, app updates, account registration, and a factory reset, the device itself may be faulty.

Signs of a hardware problem include repeated boot loops, a blank screen that never advances, severe touchscreen unresponsiveness, or setup failures on multiple known-good networks.

At that point, contact Amazon Support and provide the model number, serial number, and a clear description of what screen it is stuck on.

If the device is under warranty, replacement may be the fastest solution.

Quick troubleshooting checklist

  • Use the original power adapter and a wall outlet.
  • Reboot the modem and router.
  • Move the Echo Show close to the router.
  • Try a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.
  • Update the Alexa app.
  • Confirm the correct Amazon account is used.
  • Remove the device from any previous account.
  • Perform a factory reset if needed.
  • Check for Amazon service outages.

Working through these steps in order solves most cases where an Echo Show is stuck on the setup screen, especially when the issue is caused by network authentication or a setup interruption rather than a broken device.
