When it fails, the clues are usually physical: no link light, intermittent drops, low speeds, or a connection that shows up in Windows or macOS but never reaches the internet.

Check the Physical Layer First

Start with the simplest causes before changing software settings.

Ethernet depends on a stable physical chain from the computer to the wall jack, switch, or router, so one weak point can take the whole connection down.

Inspect the Ethernet cable

  • Look for cuts, bent pins, kinks, or crushed sections.
  • Make sure the RJ45 connectors click firmly into place.

That means your computer sees the cable, but the router is not handing out usable network settings.

  • Check whether the default gateway matches the router address.
  • Renew the DHCP lease if the address looks stale or invalid.
