Why Smart Meter Readings Stop Updating

Smart meter readings not updating can happen for several reasons, from a temporary communication fault to a supply issue with the home display or network.

The good news is that most problems are easy to check before you call your energy supplier.

A smart meter system usually has three parts: the meter itself, a communications link, and an in-home display.

If any part is offline, your usage data may stop showing in your app, on your online account, or on the display even though the meter is still recording consumption.

How Smart Meter Data Is Supposed to Work

In the UK, smart meters typically send readings to your energy supplier through the national smart meter network, often referred to as the Data Communications Company, or DCC network.

The meter stores usage data at regular intervals, then transmits it automatically so your supplier can bill you more accurately.

The in-home display is separate from the billing system.

It is designed to show near real-time energy use, but it can lose connection without affecting the meter’s ability to measure usage.

This is why a display problem does not always mean your supplier is missing readings.

  • Smart meter: Measures electricity or gas usage.
  • Communications hub: Sends meter data to the supplier.
  • In-home display: Shows current and historical usage near the meter.
  • Supplier systems: Receive, validate, and apply readings to your account.

Common Reasons Smart Meter Readings Are Not Updating

Temporary network or signal issues

Smart meters rely on a communications network, and updates can pause if there is a local signal problem, maintenance in your area, or a temporary outage.

These interruptions may resolve on their own within a few hours or a few days.

The in-home display has lost connection

If the display shows no usage or stale data, it may have moved out of range of the meter, lost power, or developed a pairing issue.

The meter may still be collecting readings correctly even while the display looks inactive.

Low battery or power interruption

Some display units use rechargeable batteries or wall power.

If the unit has been unplugged, disconnected, or left without charge, it may stop showing live information until it is restored.

Meter communications fault

Sometimes the meter itself cannot send data because the communications hub has failed or the device has been affected by a technical fault.

This usually requires supplier support or a meter engineer.

Supplier system delays

Even when the meter sends data correctly, your energy supplier may take time to process it.

Online accounts and mobile apps often update less frequently than the meter itself, especially after a switch in supplier, a tariff change, or a billing system update.

Installation or setup problem

If the smart meter was recently fitted, readings may not appear immediately.

New installations can take time to register fully on supplier systems, and gas meters may require extra checks before they begin transmitting as expected.

What You Can Check Yourself

Before contacting your supplier, run through a few basic checks.

These steps help identify whether the issue is with the meter, the display, or the account portal.

  • Check whether the in-home display has power and is turned on.
  • Move the display closer to the meter if it is portable.
  • Look for error messages, blank screens, or a frozen reading.
  • Compare the current reading with your supplier account to see whether only the app is stale.
  • Check whether other devices or appliances in the home suggest a wider power issue.
  • Wait 24 to 48 hours if the issue started recently, especially after a supplier switch or installation.

If you can still see the meter itself, take a manual reading from the device and keep a photo.

This gives you evidence of actual usage if billing questions come up later.

How to Tell Whether the Problem Is the Meter or the App

A useful way to diagnose smart meter readings not updating is to compare different sources.

If the display is blank but the meter reading on the physical device changes, the issue is likely with the display or pairing.

If the physical meter reading is updating but your supplier account is not, the problem is probably in the supplier’s data pipeline.

Many suppliers also show a “last updated” timestamp in their app or online portal.

If that timestamp is old but the meter is functioning, the software may simply be behind.

Check whether estimated bills are being used, because that can indicate the supplier has not received recent readings.

When to Contact Your Energy Supplier

Contact your supplier if the readings have not updated for several days, if the display shows repeated errors, or if estimated bills appear despite a functioning meter.

You should also get in touch if you have moved into a property with a smart meter and the account still does not show any live usage.

Have the following details ready when you contact support:

  • Your account number and address
  • Meter serial number from the meter label or bill
  • Any error codes shown on the display
  • The date you first noticed the problem
  • A manual meter reading and photo, if possible

If you are vulnerable, on a prepayment tariff, or relying on accurate data for budget control, ask the supplier to escalate the case sooner.

In some situations, they can remotely check the smart meter status before arranging an engineer visit.

Will You Still Be Charged Correctly?

Usually, yes.

A smart meter can keep measuring usage even if the display or app stops updating.

If the supplier is not receiving automatic readings, they may use estimated bills until the issue is fixed, which can later be corrected once actual readings arrive.

That said, prolonged communication failures can lead to billing inaccuracies if estimates are far from your real usage.

For this reason, saving manual readings and contacting the supplier early is important, especially during periods of high energy consumption such as winter.

Can You Reset a Smart Meter?

Some display units can be reset by unplugging them briefly or following the manufacturer’s restart steps, but the meter itself should not be tampered with.

Never open, remove, or attempt to repair the smart meter or communications hub yourself.

If a simple display restart does not work, the supplier may need to re-pair the devices remotely or arrange an engineer.

For gas meters, the display may take longer to reconnect after a battery or signal issue because gas meters usually communicate through the electricity meter or hub.

Practical Tips to Prevent Future Update Problems

  • Keep the in-home display powered and within range of the meter.
  • Check readings periodically rather than waiting for a billing issue.
  • Take occasional photos of meter readings for your records.
  • Update supplier contact details so outage notices reach you.
  • Report faults quickly so small communication problems do not become longer billing issues.

For homes with complex setups, such as outbuildings, thick walls, or multi-rate tariffs, ask the supplier whether your meter installation has any known connectivity limitations.

Some properties are more prone to data delays than standard installations, and knowing that in advance helps set realistic expectations.
