It does not always mean the compressor or furnace is actively producing conditioned air at that exact moment.

The thermostat may still show the message while the system is in a delay cycle, a fan purge, or a compressor protection period.

That is especially common with heat pumps, staged HVAC systems, and systems with built-in minimum run times.

Common Reasons the Thermostat Shows Equipment Running

1. The system is in a timed delay

Many HVAC systems include short delays before the compressor starts or stops.

These delays protect the compressor from short cycling, which can reduce efficiency and cause wear.

During that delay, the thermostat may still say the equipment is running because the control signal is active.

2. The fan is running after heating or cooling ends

For multi-stage systems, make sure the thermostat is compatible with the installed wiring and control board.
